Interested in trying something new and having fun while doing it? Check out wheel chair basketball every Thursday at 5 p.m. at the rec.
SIUC seniors, Mike Norton and Grant Robertson have been going to the rec for a few years now to do what they enjoy doing best when they have some time to burn; they play basketball. “We always go there (the rec) to play basketball and they were handing out activity pamphlets one day and we noticed wheel chair basketball was one of them so we decided to check it out,” said Mike Norton.
They enjoyed it so much that they started up their own pick up game for all students, able and disabled. “We started off this semester with just having five people, but now we are getting up to 20 showing up,” Robertson, explained.
When asked what the main difference is when playing basketball with a wheel chair, they both had similar responses. “It’s very team oriented. The best way to do good is to move the ball around a lot with good passing,” replied Grant Robertson. “It builds on communication and responsiveness with your teammates,” said Mike Norton
The team hopes to reach a goal of 30 participants, so come out and see what all the fuss is about.
